John has spent over 35 years honing his jazz style. Surely, much of that refining process has come from practice and study of the art form. But he also acknowledges that a 15 year hiatus from serious study has had a clarifying effect on his creative process, allowing the school of life its due influence as well. He studied at Berklee College of Music in the late 70's before moving to Guatemala to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Upon returning from Guatemala, desiring a family and concerned the life of a musician would be incompatible, he pursued a BA in Spanish and a Masters of Public Administration, both from Brigham Young University. His career has followed an entrepreneurial track in various business enterprises offering him opportunities to travel throughout the US and Puerto Rico. For many years music was a back seat companion, but eventually he could no longer resist the lure to create. Around 1995 or so he began buying guitars and associated gear (much to his wife's chagrin who would have rather spent the money traveling to her native Honduras), studying jazz in earnest again, and showing up at local jam sessions. In 2004 he began recording a collection of original compositions. Four years of Saturday evenings were consumed in the studio until "Sweet Apple Dream" was finally finished. This is a collection of vocal tunes that are a brand of softer jazz (though definitely not smooth jazz) likely to be more accessible to casual aficionados of the art form. Many of the lyrics refer to Christian themes and so he often speaks of the music as Christian Jazz. John continues to record and is currently working on blues compositions as well as instrumental jazz tunes in mainstream and experimental genres.
Sweet Apple Dream was recorded at DM Audio in Wilmington, DE.
